Digital Terrorism and Hate 2007

CD ROM Charts Growing Use of the Internet as a Terrorist Tool

This seventh and newest version of the Simon Wiesenthal Center's annual report of problematic websites exposes the growing use of the Internet as a key propaganda weapon, marketing tool and fundraising engine by terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda and Hamas, in addition to its continuing assessment of traditional extremist groups such as the KKK and neo-Nazis. "Although they swear to destroy the West, extremists and terrorists have taken to using Western technology to recruit, finance and plan their insidious actions," said Mark Weitzman, Director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center's Task Force Against Hate.

"Whether in Borough Park, Brooklyn, on the streets of Iraq or on the World Wide Web, violent acts of hate and prejudice are repugnant as they are intolerable," said City Council Speaker Gifford Miller. "In our loudest and strongest voice possible, we must condemn these hate mongers. Any senseless bigot, whether a tire-slasher or a terrorist, must be weeded out and brought to justice and I thank the Simon Wiesenthal Center for their diligent efforts in doing just that."

"The New York Tolerance Center is pleased to host the introduction of this important study as the examination of the rise of extremism on the Internet is an integral part of the work of our facility," added Rhonda Barad, Eastern Director of the Center.

Digital Terrorism and Hate 2007 is based on over 5,000 problematic websites posted by terrorists and extremists in the US and abroad and is designed to assist law-enforcement, public officials, educators, parents and the news media to better grasp the scope of digital hate and is used by the FBI, US Army and European Union among numerous others.
