About Tools for Tolerance® for Law Enforcement

Tools for Tolerance® for Law Enforcement is a professional development program which aims to assist law enforcement professionals, as front line service providers, explore the evolving role of law enforcement in a rapidly changing, increasingly diverse and complex society. It has been specifically designed to confront contemporary issues within the law enforcement community and to assist law enforcement professionals in their continuing effort to enhance skills in delivering a more effective level of service to the communities they are pledged to serve.

Tools for Tolerance® for Law Enforcement courses examine the process of building trust and respect, and challenges participants to enhance their critical thinking skills in the areas of diversity, ethics, and values. By utilizing a variety of adult learning modalities including interactive technology, personal testimonies, video presentations, and small group discussions, the programs present an educational experience created to engage participants on many levels. Presentations are inclusive, geared toward both uniformed and civilian personnel in all law enforcement specialties and at every level from recruit to commander.

Unique Opportunity
Tools for Tolerance® programs range from a day-long to four-day sessions.  Training courses utilize the evocative, state-of-the art exhibits of the Museum of Tolerance or the New York Tolerance Center – social laboratories designed to challenge visitors to confront personal biases and prejudice, and to promote awareness about tolerance issues.  Participants engage in discussions around diversity, personal values, and responsibility as they apply to the workplace and beyond.

Safe Space
Interactive trainings are designed to engage professionals in a space outside of the traditional law enforcement classroom.  Skilled law enforcement and civilian facilitators create a safe space that encourages openness and probing discussions through question-oriented critical dialogue.

New Perspectives
Law enforcement professionals are challenged to expand their tactical expertise into a broader format encompassing the role of a problem solver, mediator, and overall change agent to improve a community’s quality of life.

Innovative Technologies
Technology allows us to extend adult learning modalities to engage participants in candid discussion. Anonymous polling equipment and illustrative graphic displays enables students to honestly share their opinions and also reveals the larger group attitudes.

Offerings include:

Leadership Initiatives for Command Staff
This program brings together national command level professionals to address the unique challenges facing today’s law enforcement leadership. Driven by participants’ concerns, which have included:  building trust across diverse communities, working with multi-generational employees (Generations X,Y, Z), and recruitment and retention of qualified personnel, this training guides Command Staff to craft appropriate responses to complex issues.  In an ethics-based approach, participants will explore new dimensions of leadership and develop tools that translate theory into practice.

Tools for Tolerance® for Supervising Line Staff
Both command and line-level personnel often remarked that one of the most influential groups of people in an agency is the first-line supervisor.  They have the ability to influence how policies and procedures are perceived and applied. However, first-line supervisors also find themselves in the unenviable position of being sandwiched between the great expectations of leadership and perceptions of power and accountability from subordinates. As new leaders, they have to forge different relationships with individuals who used to be colleagues within an environment of limited authority. Drawing upon the models of the current Command Staff program, this presentation assists supervisors to gain expertise in certain leadership skills and to infuse those skills in a para-military organizational structure.

Beyond Diversity: Integrity as a Tool for Building Community Trust
This program refines the role of the law enforcement professional in a diverse society, provides a new way of understanding communities, and suggests how to use integrity in developing trust. Introducing the Three Culture Model, a tool that has been used successfully with international audiences on five continents, participants will get an opportunity to practice advanced communications skills.  These skills will enhance their understanding of and ability to work with people from divergent backgrounds.

Changing Role of Law Enforcement – Cultural Diversity
This core law enforcement program is designed to address the evolving role of law enforcement in a rapidly changing, increasingly diverse society. Participants are exposed to the dynamics of racism and bigotry, prejudice and discrimination in both an historic and contemporary context.  Workshops introduce new models, including Soldier to Educator, through which to view issues of diversity and to hone ethical decision-making skills.

Perspectives On Profiling - MOT
Perspectives On Profiling-MOT  is a one day course addressing the controversial issues surrounding racial profiling. The course utilizes the award-winning Perspectives On Profiling CD-Rom virtual learning experience. The CD uses branching technology that allows officers see the outcome of their choices and evaluate their consequences.  The scenarios are based on ethical dilemmas identified by officers in focus groups.  Perspectives On Profiling is sensitive to the challenges that face law enforcement both in reality and in the management of public perception.

Perspectives On Profiling – Train the Trainer
Perspectives On Profiling – Train the Trainer is a four-day program focusing on providing the information and skills necessary to ensure a successful presentation and facilitation of the Perspectives On Profiling interactive movie training. Skills and knowledge modules include understanding the fundamental issues surrounding racial profiling, the use of facilitation skills and adult learning models, and CD-Rom mechanics. Each participant  will also be given the opportunity to apply their knowledge and receive feedback from experienced trainers.

National Institutes Against Hate Crimes and Terrorism
This premier program is a 4 day Institute hosted for criminal justice professionals from across the United States. Participants from the same jurisdiction come together to explore new paradigms for understanding hate crimes and terrorism. Teams consist of professionals from across the criminal justice system.  Together, they collaborate on developing effective tools and strategies for early detection, prevention, and intervention.
